By August, the July Fourth crowd has packed up and the Labor Day crowd hasn't arrived yet. If you live here, you already know the tell: parking on Butler opens up around 6 p.m., the pier stops feeling like a subway platform, and the hostess at your usual table starts recognizing you again. This is the two-week window locals wait for all summer, and this year the calendar is denser than it's looked in a while.
The thesis of this post is simple. August is not the shoulder month it used to be. Between a citywide Restaurant Week, a run of tribute nights at the Post Theater, and four newer or reworked kitchens worth a second look, the residents' calendar peaks right as the visitor calendar dips. Here is how to work it.
Restaurant Week, August 3–17
Tybee Island Restaurant Week returns August 3-17, shining a spotlight on the island's diverse dining scene, and this year the two-week format matters more than the usual prix-fixe framing. A single weekend of specials rewards visitors. Fourteen days rewards the person who lives ten minutes from every participating kitchen and can go on a Tuesday.

The event is organized by Tybee Island Main Street, and the participating list tends to skew toward the independent kitchens rather than the beachfront volume spots. If you have been meaning to try Zunzibar or Pier 16 without the July line, this is the window.
The New (and Newly Renovated) Short List
Four places on the island are worth a fresh visit this month, whether or not they land on the Restaurant Week roster.
Zunzibar. Savannah's favorite South African cuisine has arrived on Tybee. Zunzibar is a city favorite ready to make an impression on islanders, and devoted patrons can expect their classic menu items and a few new Tybee Island-inspired dishes. If you have eaten at the downtown Savannah original, the Tybee menu will feel familiar with a coastal tilt.
Treylor Park Beach Party. Now open on Tybee's south end, Treylor Park Beach Party brings its signature spin on Southern comfort food straight to the shore. This beachy offshoot of the beloved downtown Savannah original features playful bites, tropical drinks, and a breezy atmosphere. Good for a post-beach lunch when you don't want to change out of your swimsuit.
Pier 16 Seafood Restaurant. A family-owned seafood spot located in downtown Tybee, just one block from South Beach, with a rooftop deck overlooking Tybrisa Street. Cornhole downstairs, rooftop bar upstairs. This is the sunset-drink recommendation to give to out-of-town family who are staying with you in August.
Arrie's Ice Cream and Loaded Teas. The newest arrival on Tybrisa, at 18C, held its ribbon cutting on May 19, 2026. If you have kids or grandkids visiting, this is the after-dinner walk-to spot that did not exist a year ago.
Two older places that quietly upgraded are also worth flagging: Sea Wolf Tybee on North Campbell Avenue continues to run its no-reservations oysters-and-cocktails format for the North End crowd, and Tybee Salt Spa has opened a massage room at Beachview Inn & Spa, using steam to loosen up what the beach walk didn't.
The Weekly Rhythm
Beyond Restaurant Week, August has a set of standing dates that residents build the week around. If you are new to the island, or you moved here from somewhere colder and are still figuring out what a Tybee Monday looks like, here is the shape of it:
- Monday, 4–7 p.m. — Tybee Island Farmers Market at the Lighthouse. Local food, art and crafts, and live music from Monty Parks. Come at 4 for the produce, stay past 5 for the music.
- Tuesday, through August 11 — Tie-Dye Tuesdays at Kelly & Company. A dye-it-yourself session that has become a genuinely charming standing date for families. Last one is the 11th, so this week and next are the last shots.
- Friday, 9 a.m. — Free Yoga Fridays on the beach. A community beach yoga class sponsored by The Deck Beachbar & Kitchen, taught by Laurie Kinkel, founder of Tybee Yoga & Healing Arts, who has been teaching on the beach since 2013. Weather permitting. Bring your own mat and a towel for sand cleanup.
- Wednesday through Monday — Tybee Island Lighthouse tours. The museum's sunset and full-moon summer tours run through August and are the single best thing to do with a houseguest who has already been to the beach twice.
Tybee Post Theater, August Nights
The Post Theater's summer programming leans tribute-band this year, and the calendar is stacked in a way that rewards the resident who can walk home afterward. Recent and upcoming shows on the Post's calendar have included American Elton, Fleetwood Max, 70's Kids as a Solid Gold tribute band, Kids in America as a totally 80's tribute band, and 90's Kids as a Superfly tribute, alongside China Grove as a Doobie Brothers tribute and The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra's Broadway to Bourbon Street big-band show. The venue is small enough that a Wednesday night walk-up is often still possible, which is a luxury most Savannah venues gave up a long time ago.
A note residents pass along to visitors: beach wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the lifeguard station on the south end of Tybee Pier and at the Tybee Fire Department behind the YMCA on 5th Street. Useful information to have on hand when parents or grandparents come for the long weekend.
Looking Past August
Two dates worth putting on the September and October calendar now, because both fill up fast:
Labor Day Beach Bash, September 6. The annual Labor Day celebration at the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion, with live music and a fireworks show. The Post Theater programming has framed it as a live concert starting at 7 p.m. and a fireworks show at dark on Sunday, September 6, all on the iconic Tybee Pier. If you host on your porch, the sightlines from the north-facing streets are still the best-kept secret on the island.
Tybee Island Pirate Fest, October 8–11. The 22nd Annual Tybee Island Pirate Festival returns with live music, the Thieves Market, Little Mateys Cove, and more. The Buccaneer Ball on October 9 from 6 to 10 p.m. kicks off the weekend and is held at The Crab Shack. This is the weekend to either lean all the way in or leave town; there is no in-between.
And in November, Tybee Tour de Art returns on November 21, featuring 50-plus local artists across North End shops, bars, and restaurants including Sea Wolf Tybee, Irritable Pelican Gallery, Zunzibar, The Shoppes at 1207, The Chapel by the Sea, The Lot, and the Tybee Oaks businesses Huc A Poos, Tybean, and Inferno Tybee. Vendor applications open September 1 if you know an artist who should be on that map.

The temptation, when you have lived on Tybee for a few years, is to treat August as the month you finally rest. That is fair. But the island's dining and cultural scene has quietly deepened over the last 18 months, and the residents who explore it in August are the ones who end up with the best answer when a friend from Ohio asks where to eat, or when a neighbor considering a move to Skidaway or the Landings asks what living on the coast actually feels like on a random Tuesday in August.
The answer, this year, is that it feels like more than it used to.
